Rufus the Rooster

P1060053
For those of you who have chickens you will already know what I am talking about. Some chickens have a wonderful ability to make you love them.
P1060052
This lil guy is Rufus. He is a Cochin. He is one of the baby chicks we got this spring.
This is his baby picture.
P1060051
Not only is he handsome. He is turning out to be quite the perfect gentlemen.
P1060049
He watches out for his ladies. He finds all the good bugs for them and promptly alerts them when he has a good find so they can come eat it too. He is even practicing his mating dance as well as the actual mating. He still needs some work, but he is getting there.
P1060071
When entering the chicks yard he usually comes out to greet us and he likes to be held. Can't ask for much more in a chicken.

P1060048
This is Fancy, she is a cochin. She is one of our very first chickens and one that we adore very much. I hope they become great friends when Rufus becomes bigger.

Pierre is Expecting!

Yesterday we found this odd sight in the chicken coop.
P1060081
This butt facing out is a lot bigger than the usual butts we see in the roost boxes. There is also a bunch of straw in the nest box which we didn't put there. We usually use paper shreds in the boxes instead of straw or hay. So, whoever is in this box must have put all that straw in there before climbing in.
P1060087
Oh! Hello Pierre. What are you doing?
P1060079
Oh hi! Im just, well, um, IM......
P1060086
Sitting on an egg!
P1060082
It's a bad photo, but sure enough. Pierre is setting on an egg.
Since the geese have started using the pond we put in, we have noticed a great increase in the amount of mating between Sophie and Pierre. We are hoping for some babies this time!

A history of Pierre:
Pierre was not well liked by the other webbed footed friends when "he" came home with us on that wonderful day. It took a long time for the flock to except "him". We were told Pierre was a boy and Sophie, our other goose was a girl. We have found this to be total opposite. Pierre is the girl. Sophie is the boy.
So, Kelsi and I got a lot of special attention from "him". "He" thought we were his parents. "He"followed us everywhere.
"He" especially loved to be held
It took a while, but eventually the flock took "him" in.
"He" still likes to be held every once in a while.

But "he" eventually became very independent.
Earlier this spring Pierre made a nest in the middle of the coop. "He" would attack our feet whenever we walked by. So I guess the roost box is an improvement! Least he won't bite us when he's in there. (hopefully)

Have your geese ever hatched there own eggs? Any advice for us? We are pretty much on the side of letting nature do it's thing. We see no reason why Pierre shouldn't be able to do this all by herself. Like in nature.

The Greenhouse is Overflowing!

We have packed this greenhouse full! This is the most full it has been since we built it last year. We have twice as many plants than last year. We are putting plants in every square inch.
We have 400 something plants in here. Most of which we are going to sell.
The squashes are coming along nicely! We have nearly 100 of them.
51 strawberry plants
Eggplants and peppers. They are still really small. The slow growth is very unusual for us. Last year the peppers were nearly a foot tall by this time.
Tomatoes are going crazy!
This yellow pear tomato plant is 17in tall already!

How are your plants doing?

Thanks for reading
