Transplanting Greens

The plug trays were overflowing with greens, so Kelsi spent the last 2days transplanting them all. Hours of time were spent in this massive transplant.

Our plants don't normally get leggy, but some have gotten so big that they have done just that.

Bok Choy

We have all the transplanted greens underneath row cover in the greenhouse. 

This shelf is 16feet and is already loaded with hundreds of plants. We are going to be adding a new shelf in the near future I guess!

Most have transplanted very well. There are a couple wilted plants, but for the most part the plants are doing excellent!

Grow Station up Close

Transplanting Peppers

The peppers were big enough to transplant, so Kelsi and I spent the afternoon in the greenhouse yesterday doing just that!

We also moved the onions outside to free up some room under the grow lights.

Kelsi made up all the labels.

We ended up using 9 flats loaded with 18 4" pots each.

We had a lot of help from our pal Matilda (top right).

She kept a close eye on us.

Peppers always seem to be sad after transplanting. The leaves get saggy and the plants just look terrible. We try to counter that by watering with warm water after transplanting and we try to limit the time they have to spend outside before getting them back under the lights.

In total we have 159 peppers and eggplants! Not too bad at all. Warming mats were a success!

More Seed Starting of Round 2 for 2012

I planted another seed tray tonight.

12 pods of each: spinach, arugula, salad mix, cilantro, pok choi, Komatsuma Tendergreen

I also planted 1 open flat of Yellow Wonder Wild Strawberry, these are supposed to be the best strawberries in the history of the world! They are the smallest seeds I have ever handled. It took my best effort not to just dump the seeds in one spot and call it quits. The scatter method was even difficult with seeds this small. 

We now have 5 flats in the new grow station under the grow table.

Pepper progress is changing daily! 

I swear they are twice as big as the day before, each time I look at them

Seed Starting 2012, Round 2

We find ourselves consistently looking back at our blog for historical data relating to our seed starting schedule, transplant dates, and so forth. We are going to try to post more of our schedule on the blog in order to better document and track our schedule and successes. So some of this info may not be interesting, but we will use it next year to better help us through this busy season.

Today was the day for cold weather crops and tomatoes. In total, nearly a thousand seeds were sown at The Halpern Homestead today. 

Tray 11: Tomatoes. 72 pods. 6 varieties.

Tray 12: 36 pods of tomatoes, 3 varieties. 12 pods cauliflower, 12 pods cabbage, 12 pods broccoli.

Tray 13: Lettuces, 12 pods of each variety, 6 varieties. 

Handful of cauliflower.

Handful of lettuce.

Our usual performers are doing well. California Orange

Mirasol Pepper

The peppers seem to have started off a little faster this year, maybe due to the seed warming mat. They are about the size that our peppers were last year at one month, instead of 18days. There are still a lot of empty pods that have had no germination. 

The temperature module is working pretty well at keeping the soil right around 80degrees. It has a harder time when the room is cool, but it still works well enough. 

We planted the onion trays with different patterns to see what works best for us. The tray above was seeded by sprinkling the seeds on the soil surface

The one shown here was a bit more purposeful in rows. 

Pretty good start so far to our seedling endeavors.
