We planted a ton of chard this year since it is so delicious.
Unfortunately a lot of the leaves have browned entirely or just in certain locations.
The body of the plants seem fine. New leaves are coming in around the browned ones.
Our spinach has encountered the same fate.
Do you know what causes this? If so what is a good non chemical treatment to remedy. Any thoughts?

Interesting. I've never had that happen to my chard, I'm interested in what might be causing it.
I'm afraid you "might" have a slight infestation of leafminers. Take a good look at some of the leaves that are just starting to brown and see if there are little tunnels inbetween the leaf tissue...if so you should also see some small maggot like worms.
Simply pull the bad leaves off as they start to become infested and give them to your chickens, by late summer the whole issue should resolve itself.

Yup, you got leafminers. I've battled them for a few years. They love spinach, chard, beets, and some beans. They are wind born, and very hard to get rid of. Keep the leaves picked, so they don't have anything to attack, destroy current infestations, and you can consider some rowcover, which is the only thing that can keep them from blowing in.
